'You are lying': Wolf of Wall Street clashes with Weekend Today hosts

The infamous fraudster known as the Wolf of Wall Street has clashed with Weekend Today hosts in a fiery interview.

Jordan Belfort, whose memoirs inspired the 2013 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is now a motivational speaker focusing on "entrepreneurship" and "ethical persuasion".

Belfort spent 22 months in prison for money laundering and fraud related to his time as a stockbroker, with his scams costing investors more than US$200 million (A$296 million).

His lavish lifestyle and drug-fuelled parties also made him the poster boy for Wall Street greed and excess.

In a confrontational exchange this morning, Belfort called hosts Allison Langdon and Jayne Azzopardi liars when quizzed on his notorious past.

Langdon asked Belfort whether he thought his new line of work was "ethical" given his past crimes.

"You are a thief. You went to jail for it. You defrauded victims of $220 million that we know of. What else are you?" Langdon asked.

A visibly uncomfortable Belfort hit back.

"You are all lying right now," he said.

"You are completely fabricating a story that is not grounded in reality. It's just not."

Belfort said his victims were already wealthy and insisted all had been repaid.

"It was 30 years ago and I have certainly redeemed myself many times over. I find it shocking and sad," he said.

"Sad for you, not for me. My life is wonderful."

Belfort had one final jab to sign off ahead of his upcoming speaking event.

"I love Australia. Australians are wonderful. You personally are clueless though."
